Workers’ Compensation Benefits Cover Medical Bills And Lost Wages
When filing a claim for workers’ compensation, it is important to understand the benefits you are entitled to. At The Accident Law Group, P.A., in Coral Gables, our attorneys are dedicated to helping you understand the benefits available and making sure you get everything you deserve. The primary benefits fall into two categories: medical benefits and wage benefits.
Medical Benefits
After being hurt on the job, you are entitled to see a doctor and be treated in whatever way the doctor recommends for injuries sustained in the workplace accident. If the doctor recommends medication, surgery, physical therapy or any other form of treatment, it should be covered. You also have the right to be seen by the appropriate specialist based on the type of injury you suffered. Additionally, you should be reimbursed for the cost of travel to and from medical appointments.
There is often a psychological component in workers’ compensation cases. In addition to missing work, you may not be able to function in the same way you did prior to the work accident. You may suffer from depression or other mental issues. Treatment for these issues should be covered as well.
Be aware that you have the right to a second opinion from your own doctor or an independent medical examination if you are unhappy with the evaluation provided by the insurance company doctor.
Wage Benefits
If a doctor says that you cannot work, or if you have limitations and your employer cannot provide you with a job within those limitations, you are entitled to wage benefits. These benefits only cover approximately two-thirds of your pre-injury wages. In some situations, you may also be entitled to obtain an advance on your workers’ compensation checks.
If you suffered a permanent injury and some portion of your body is impaired, you may also be entitled to a lump-sum payment in addition to wage benefits.
